American Legion History
The purpose of the Legion and our Post is to assist veterans in our
area, to be of service to the Northern Michigan community, and to
support programs that help develop and engage our local kids. We
support our local school system with a high school scholarship,
leadership awards, mentoring and a meet a veteran breakfast with local fifth graders. We perform
numerous functions to support our community, such as blood drives, an
Easter egg hunt, flag supplies, and military ceremonies and parades.
We provide free funeral services to veterans that so request,
donations to needy vets' families during the holiday season, ship
"care" packages overseas to deployed troops, support the county
veterans office, and provide rides for vets when needed. These are just a few
of the many projects that the Wolverine Post is involved with during
the year.
Services
The Post provides a variety of services for veterans, not limited to their current membership.
Members of the Post place American flags on veterans’ graves at Silver Lake Cemetery before Memorial Day, remaining in place until after Labor Day each year. They also partake in Memorial Day Services in both Indian River and Vanderbilt.
Transportations services also are provided by Post members for needy veterans to VA hospitals in Saginaw, Ann Arbor and Detroit in cooperation with vans, which are provided by Otsego and Cheboygan Counties. Post members also visit and support hospitalized veterans and their families.
